The site reportedly been attacked late last week and it site was not accessible late on Monday. This is first time that medical records of a patient had been stolen and been held for a ransom.
We are now witnessing new way of demanding ransom, I get the feeling not everything should be online.
This was the statement issued by the attacker:
“I have your [expletive]! In *my* possession, right now, are 8,257,378 patient records and a total of 35,548,087 prescriptions. Also, I made an encrypted backup and deleted the original. Unfortunately for Virginia, their backups seem to have gone missing, too. Uhoh :(For $10 million, I will gladly send along the password.”
It was reported to the The Washington Postby Sandra Whitley Ryals, director of Virginia’s Department of Health Professions that a criminal investigation is in the progress.
